Evaluating Health Websites
For your health’s sake, please evaluate health information on the web with great care. Check the validity of information from one site by comparing it with other sites. Non-profit organizations with a mission to share information, universities, and professional health organizations often have quality websites. Commercial websites which advertise products and any site asking for your personal information should be read with great care.
Remember the ABC’s of evaluation:
- Authority – Who is the source? Is there an ‘About Us’ page and contact information?
- Bias – Are they promoting a product or service? Who provides funding?
- Currency – What is the date on the information? Are there broken (neglected) links?
The Health on the Web resources have been evaluated and represent some of the best available in online health information.
