Storytime On the Go!

Ongoing

Create a storytime experience at home with Storytime On The Go packets. Each packet will include 6 books and an age age-appropriate literacy activity.
The early literacy activities will support one or more of the five early literacy practices: talking, singing, reading, writing and playing.

Storytime On The Go packets are available for toddlers and preschoolers- just choose the packet that’s right for your child

Toddler (suggested up to age 3) stories for children who are ready for books with short stories
Preschool (suggested ages 3 – 5) books that include longer stories

Stop by the Children’s Room to pick yours up!

Flipbook Animation

Grades 4-8

Grades 4-8 are invited to join Ms Maddie to create their own flipbooks. Learn what it takes to make a flipbook, create your idea, and animate it. Space is limited so please register.

Free Comic Book Day

May the 4th Be With You!

It is “Free Comic Book Day” 2024! This year Free Comic Book Day falls on “Star Wars Day: May the 4th Be With You”. In celebration of this, we are having Star Wars-inspired activities throughout the children’s room.

Find all the objects in our Star Wars scavenger hunt, then enter to win a Star Wars Prize pack. Star Wars-inspired craft to take and make. Star Wars books to check out, and an interactive bulletin board. 

Free comic books are available while supplies last.

Baby & Toddler Storytime

Mondays, May 6, 13, and 20, 10:00 AM

Ages 0-36 months

Join Ms Corey for a weekly storytime designed for children birth – 36 months old.  The storytime will include a book followed by music, fingerplays, movement, and yes, even bubbles! 

Held indoors in the Library’s Meeting Room. No registration is required. Please bring your SAILS Library card so your child may take storytime books home.

Seekonk Library storytimes focus on talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing- important principles for your child’s reading readiness.

Beginner Crochet for Kids

Tuesday, May 7, 6:30 PM

Grades 3-5

Kids in grades 3-5 are invited to join Ms. Sandie to learn some basic crochet stitches. We’ll learn the chain stitch, single crochet, and double crochet as well as casting off. All materials will be provided and kids will leave with their own crochet hook to continue practicing at home. Registration is required.

Paws to Read

Wednesdays, May 8 and May 22, 3:00 – 4:30 PM (timeslots)

Build reading skills and gain confidence in reading aloud by coming to the Library to Paws to Read! Register to reserve a 15-minute time slot to have your child read to Gizmo and Pepe, two adorable chihuahua/pomeranian mix therapy dogs. Research has shown that reading aloud to another person can help struggling readers with their overall performance and confidence. But did you know that reading comprehension improves even more when reading to a dog rather than an adult? It’s true! 

Each one-on-one private session is facilitated by Sandra Healey and her two dogs. Space is limited.

Children should bring a book they can read or come a few minutes before to select one in the children’s room.

Preschool Storytime

Drop in

Join Ms Sandie for a weekly storytime for the preschool crowd (ages 3-5)! Younger siblings are welcome!

Each week we’ll be reading 2-3 stories and completing a related activity.

Registration is NOT required, but please bring your SAILS library card to bring more books home and continue the storytime adventure!

Have you ever wondered how R2-D2 and other droids from the Star Wars movies are built?

Join us for a presentation from Joe Francazio to learn how!  

Joe is a member of the New England Droid Builders. He will be bringing his fully functional replica R2-D2 from the Star Wars movie franchise. Joe will be here for a presentation on building droids, talk to us about how R2-D2 was created, answer questions, and have time to take pictures with R2-D2.

Grade 4 & 5 Book Chat

Thursday, May 30, 6:00 PM

Kids in grades 4 and 5 are invited to join Ms Corey for a Book Chat. Read “Leonard (My Life as a Cat)” by Carlie Sorosiak, then join us for a book discussion and book-related activity, Thursday, May 16, 6:00-6:45 pm. All kids that need a copy of the book can pick up their hold during vacation week, April 16-20. Ebooks and audiobooks are also available.  Return book after book chat.

Book Summary:

Leonard is an alien, sent on an earthly sabbatical and mistakenly given the body of a rather scruffy stray. Rescued by animal lover Olive, Leonard does his best to study the humans he hoped to join while contending with the indignities of hair balls, kitty litter, and a compulsion to shred the curtains. And as he collects experiences, Leonard finds himself unexpectedly caught up in one of the most human emotions of all: love. The trouble? He needs to get to his pickup spot two thousand miles away by the end of the month or he will be stuck on Earth as a cat forever. 

The Rhythm Room with Rick Morin

Wednesday, June 13, 5:00 PM

Join us in the meadows for a fun, interactive drumming event. The Rhythm Room explores world music as it relates to today’s pop culture, combining discussion, demonstration, and participation. The use of world percussion, drum sets, and buckets is educational as well as motivational and fun. Rick Moran is a percussionist who will be bringing enough buckets for everyone in the crowd to play. He is a part of the Rhythm Room along with 4 band members. They bring an educational program that incorporates full audience participation.

Join in the fun and drum along. You need not have any percussion experience to play along! 

This event will be in the meadows weather permitting or in the large meeting room.

Storytime in the Meadows

Fridays, June 21 – August 9, 10:00 AM

Join us for a weekly storytime for all ages! We’ll meet outside in the gazebo at 10 am for stories and more! In the case of inclement weather, storytime will be moved inside. Please bring a blanket or towel to sit on outside.

Japanese Folktales & Origami for Families

Familes with children ages 5+

Parents’ Choice Award winner Motoko regales families (ages 5 and up) with delightful folktales from her native Japan, combined with hands-on origami activities. Motoko’s step-by-step instructions make the ancient Japanese art fun and accessible. Children will learn focus, imagination, and precision while creating pieces of art.

This program is funded by a grant from the Seekonk Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

Eric Carle Birthday Party

Get Ready to Draw!

Tuesday, June 25, 4:00 PM

Get your pens and crayons ready to draw! Join us in the large meeting room for an hour of drawing techniques taught to you by illustrators Jason Chin, Tara Audibert, and Rachel Dinunzio. These illustrators will be live virtually via Zoom. 

Jason Chin is the illustrator for iREAD 2024 and many award-winning books. Tara Audibert is the author/illustrator of JoJo Makoons Fancy Pants from Heartdrum books and Rachel Dinunzio is a graphic novelist/illustrator of Forsythia: Rise of the Cupcakes from Paw Prints Publishing.

This event will be a live presentation with the three illustrators via Zoom. The event will be in-house in the large meeting room. It is a one-hour lesson on drawing with instruction.

Grades entering PreK-5 (in Sept 2024)

Join our friends from the MA Audubon Society/Oak Knoll for a hands-on program for kids entering Preschool through grade 5 in September of 2024. What kinds of shelters do animals use? In this program, participants will explore the different types of homes animals use throughout Massachusetts. Participants will then design a structure that can be placed in their communities to aid wildlife.

This program has a rain-date of Wednesday, July 10th in the case of inclement weather.

Pumpernickel Puppets Presents: Sir George and the Dragon

Ages 3+

Join an adventurous princess as she journeys to Mystery Mountain to visit the Great Green Dragon. Along the way you’ll meet Zelda the babysitter, a silly bat, Sir George and his clumsy dog, and of course the lovable dragon. Will Sir George slay the dragon?
Not to worry, everything ends happily in this fun show. Presented with large colorful hand puppets and live voices and sound effects.

Incredible Earthworms

Ages 5+

Learn about earthworms and the important role they play in our environment. Discover an earthworm’s anatomy and learn how it has adapted to its life underground. We will learn about how they break down living and dead material, and turn it into nutrient-rich soil Develop a new appreciation for these simple invertebrates while learning about decomposing and soil recycling. Observe live earthworms with magnifiers!

Participants will make their own worm farms, so please bring a clean glass jar from your recycling bin!

Younger siblings are welcome.

Storytime at the Seekonk Fire Museum

Blueberry Storytime at Osamequin Farm

Join Ms Sandie as we visit Farmer Sarah at Osamequin farm for a special blueberry-themed storytime! We’ll read stories and talk about how blueberries grow, followed by some blueberry picking at the farm! Each family will get to pick and take home one pint of fresh blueberries!

Fiddle N’ Fun

Join Joel Beauchemin from Fiddle N’ Fun for a fun filled hour of learning.  Fiddle N’ Fun is an independent music education program designed for young children. They provide unique, hands-on learning experiences through singing, movement, instruments, and much more!  Each session includes Suzuki-style activities using simple one-stringed instruments; these Fiddlestix are incredibly fun, durable, and have been proven to prepare young listeners for learning the violin.

Read to Oliver…from anywhere

Does your child need help building confidence reading aloud?
Do you have a child who would simply enjoy reading to an adorable labradoodle?
Either way, with Oliver now on YouTube, any time is a good time to Read To Oliver!
Have your child select a book to read and Oliver will listen for 20 minutes.
Good to know...reading aloud to a therapy dog has also been shown to improve children’s attitude about reading.
